What I remember of my early years is shared by my mother, older brother and older sister. I was born in a small country in southeast Asia called Cambodia. This was in December 1974, during the era of Pol Pot. Like many peoples having positions of influence or any degree of knowledge or learnings,My father ( a police chief at the time ) was on the list to be hunted and killed.

Not long after I was born, my family fled for safety in the cover of darkness over the course of long nights towards the border of Thailand where there were camps for refugees.

My older brother was asked to stay behind to take care of our ailing grandmother who had recentlly survived a fire that left her with burns covering the whole of her body.

With the cover of darkness, my family carried me, lying low, crawling across the grounds amid the sounds and crackle of ammunition cross fire and grenades exploding.....

There were unspeakable risks and challenges that those of us affected had to face firsthand. Nevertheleast, we sought and found safety in the refugee camps of Thailand. From there we heard of people across the world wanting to help sponsor those like ourselves displaced by the war. Countries like Austrailia, France, Enlgland and others offered. We didn't no of anyone in any of those countries, but later than we heard of America where my mother had friends who had gone ahead. and so that's where we went.

My older brother....
